Golf woods in the past simply related to golf drivers and golf fairway woods but more recently a new family of clubs called golf hybrid woods have started to make their mark denting the popularity of golf fairway woods. So let’s take a look at each.

Golf Drivers
Internal computer aided design has helped manufactures to remove metal from where it is not required to reposition it where it is going to have most affect. This has brought into being golf clubs that gook anything but traditional.

Square golf drivers were the first to break the mould.  Callaway Golf made the first launch in the autumn of 2006 – the 460cc FT-I. It positioned weight to the extreme corners of the club head in order to raise the MOIMoment of Inertia. This in turn minimises both horizontal and vertical twisting providing far greater forgiveness to off centre shots. Since their launch many brands have used similar principles include Nike Golf, Ram Golf and The Masters Golf Company. These offer major benefits particularly to mid to high handicap golfers.

Triangular shaped golf driver head then burst into golf equipment reviews. This design enables weight to be positioned as far away from the face as practical. This lowers the centre of gravity, optimising the golf ball’s launch angle and once again increases the MOI for increased distance and forgiveness. A feature that is ideal for all golfers, making it easier to get good distance off the golf tee yet still maintain control. A typical example of this driver is Titleist’s 907D1.

Moveable weight technology has featured recently in golf driver design too. Both TaylorMade with their r7 Superquad and more recently Mizuno’s MP600 offer products where weight can de moved around the club head. This enabling it to be customised to individual golfers preferred ball flights. Golfers that hook shots should position more weight towards the toe, while golfers that slice should position it more towards the heel.

Golf Hybrid woods
Some may say that hybrid golf clubs have been around for years. It’s true but not in the form that they are offered today. That why in recent months they have become more and more popular even on the tour, as the new breed provide the distance of a golf wood with the control of a golf iron.

A hybrid golf club’s shaft is similar in length to a golf iron making it easier to use and giving greater control. Its head, however, is similar in shape and construction to a fairway wood giving good distance both off the tee or fairway. The sole often features “rails”.

Centre of gravity
COG The point within a golf clubs head at which it would be perfectly balanced. This will effect the launch angle or the trajectory of the ball. Clubs with their COG low and toward the back of a club head will encourage a higher trajectory. Moment of inertia – MOI A term applied to a club head's resistance to twisting when the ball is struck. This becomes of paramount importance with off centre hits as the greater the resistance, the greater the chance the ball will fly straighter. Moveable weight technology.

The ability to move weight around the club head. This enables the club to be customised to a players preferred ball trajectory helping reduce hooks and slices. Launch angle The vertical angle at which the ball comes off the club face. Research shows that to make a golf ball go further for a given swing speed the launch angle and the spin speed must be optomised. This will generally be achieved with a higher launch angle and less backspin. Top tour drivers launch it at 11degrees or more with about 2,200 rpm or less backspin.
