Choosing Golf Clothing That's Right For You
Golf clothing has developed rapidly over recent years. Major brands now offer layering systems, ensuring that any perspiration created during the round is vented free to the outside world. This avoids your golf clothing becoming cold and clammy – saving more energy for your swing.
As we move into winter your
golf clothes should consist of 3 layers. A Comfort Layer that wick moisture quickly away from your skin. A Warm Layer that trap lots of air - one of the best isolators against the cold. And finally a Protective Layer of either a windproof or waterproof, dependent upon the conditions. Each layer should be made of modern man-made fibers allowing the whole layering system to breath in harmony.
Golf clothing not only has to be functional but fashionable too. Once again the golf clothing brands have come to the rescue offering stylish cuts and some great colour way. They are great both on and off the course.

Golf Clothing
In the past golf clothing for many golfers was made up from what was generally available in the wardrobe. The result was a selection of items not necessarily designed to work together. Possibly the worst offenders were shirts manufactured from cotton. These absorbed perspiration and held it close to the skin, which became clammy and unpleasant to wear, especially when it cools.
Modern golf clothes are made using man-made technical fabrics, which are designed for specific purpose. Old fashioned cotton vests have been replaced for the Comfort Layer by compression underwear, which is made from a mixture of Polyester and Spandex. These not only wick perspiration away, but also improve blood circulation, reduces mussel vibration and micro tears - key factors in energy loss. They also give a very pleasing firm fit favored by sportsmen and women in many disciplines.
The Warm Layer was traditionally fulfilled by woolen sweaters, which like cotton absorbs moisture - up to one third of their own weight! So again research has gone into producing materials ideal for golf clothes that hold air – an excellent insulator against the cold, but also allow moisture to pass through, on its journey to the outside world. Typical examples are Polar fleece and Insula™.
Windproofs and waterproofs jackets provide the final Protective Layer dependent on conditions. The factors that make them different relate to their weight, water resistance and their cost. Windproof golf clothing is lighter enabling golfers to swing more freely. Quality garments are manufactured from fabrics which have a totally windproof membrane bonded to them. It contains pores 900 times larger than water vapor modules, which allows perspiration to pass through but not wind.
Waterproofs are generally heavier and more expensive garments that are lined with a membrane that is capable of keeping rain out but allowing the body to breath. Zips are often concealed and seams taped.
Trousers are an important element too. In really wet weather the obvious choice is trousers to match the protective qualities of your waterproof jackets. On other occasions, there may be opportunities to wear trousers that have a Teflon finish. This help to prevent stains and to repel water. Finally, don’t forget layering, it’s important for your lower body too. Compression leggings are available in two weights one designed to deal with temperatures below 20°c, the other below 10°c.
