A shirt for all courses

When is a golf shirt more than a shirt? The answer these days is most of the time. While some golf shirts are simple polo shirts, others are designed with inbuilt UV protection and moisture-wicking properties; have no need to be ironed and can even prevent the collar from curling in the wash.

Whatever you choose, it’s vital that your golf shirt is comfortable and does not hinder your swing – and you’ll probably want it to fit in with your style, be it loose and baggy or stretchy and body-hugging. In common with other golf apparel, both men’s and ladies’ golf shirts offer a great variation in choice and price, and all the big names in golfwear, such as Callaway, Ashworth and, will stock a good selection, along with Glenmuir, Adidas, Galvin Green and Nike.

Glenmuir, for instance, has recently introduced what it calls ‘the world’s most technologically advanced golf shirt’, which uses a blend of hollow and solid fibres called ThermoCool, which keeps over-heated players cool by letting vapour evaporate – and keeps chilly players warm by trapping body heat and acting as a barrier to cool external air. In common with many leading brands, Galvin Green, Adidas and Nike similarly offer moisture-wicking properties in their respective Ventil8, ClimaCool and DriFit ranges – but do not yet claim to be able to help keep golfers warm at the same time!
