The difference often lies in the tailoring and extra refinements, such as sealable pockets, water-repellent zips, ease of use (for example touch-and-close rubber tabs on the cuffs and the ability to adjust the collar, and even the width across the back); and use of stretch-fabric to facilitate your swing The best golf waterproofs are lightweight and swish-free – and if you are likely to play in a warm, wet climate, you may prefer a short-sleeved waterproof jacket. When it comes to choosing waterproof golf trousers, look for adjustability, leg length – the bottom should go over the collar of your shoe to prevent water getting in – and an elasticated waist to pull on easily over your golf trousers. Some will have slits instead of pockets, to enable you to reach into your trouser pocket for a tee or scorecard.
Don’t forget that ‘showerproof’ and ‘windproof’ are not the same as waterproof – most shower-proof golfwear is treated with Teflon, but is not as waterproof as GoreTex, and windproofs are designed to keep you warm and moisture-free, but at best will only keep out a light shower.
