Now a legend within the golf industry, Ping Golf started some fifty years ago in Redwood City, California. There Karsten Solheim, a frustrated golfer set about designing a better putter, used his engineering background and the laws of physics. The result not only a putters, the sound of which gave Ping its name, but also the start of a revolution that would effecting the whole golf club industry. Ping Golf in the 60's...Saw the move of both Karsten and his wife to Phoenix Arizona, where more than 1000 workers are now employed by Ping Golf under the leadership of John A Solheim their youngest son. Here John and his father worked together developing new golf club concept including their first cavity back iron, called the Ping 69, achieved by milling out the back of a forged iron. An innovation that lead to an increased sweet spots and reduced twisting on off-centre shots. Later in 1966 they refined their original putter design creating another land mark club the Anser, so called because the word “Answer” would not fit on the club’s toe! A club that has become the most popular putter in golf history, for both amateurs and pros alike. Ping Golf in the 70's...The next decade saw more innovation at Ping Golf. In particularly the introduction of a loft and lie gauge which latter formed the base for Ping's custom fit Colour Code System. The latter recognised that not all golfers are the same size and that their golf clubs should be different lengths too. In addition the early 60s also saw the acquisition of an investment casting foundry and heat treatment plan, which enabled the tighter quality control and consistency that Karsten sought. Ping Golf in the 80's...The year 1982 stands out as another vintage year, seeing the introduction of the Ping Eye 2 which became the best selling iron in golf and the introduction of lightweight Ping bags. The 80’s are also famous for the “square groove controversy” which put Ping at loggerheads with both The PGA and USGA Tours. Today while many models do not conform to a new 2008 ruling agreement has been reached that the vast majority of golfers (99%) can continue to use their Ping golf clubs to at least 2024.
