Golf Clothing - The Base layer

Waterproofs | Base Layer | Warm Layer | Multi-Layering | Outer Layer |

So it’s important when buying wet weather gear to ensure that everything breaths and helps transfer moisture quickly away from the skin to the outside world. Let start with garments worn next to the skin - often referred to as the base layer. They should be made from man-made fibres, usually polyester, and are fashioned to be a snug fit thus ensuring maximum wicking properties. Unfortunately all too many golfers wear garments made from cotton, which is fine for summery conditions when the body isn’t working hard. For golfers however, cotton holds moisture stopping its transfer away from the skin. Result: heavy garments that sap energy and are unpleasantly clammy.

Base layers are also available as compression garments too. These, used in most sports today, have the added advantage as their name suggests, of compressing muscles which help reduce the build up of unwanted lactic acid. Result improved stamina, more energy for the round and quicker recovery times.
