Now to the outer or wet weather layer – where many golfers thinking start and finishes! These golf clothes need to totally waterproof but this in itself can create problems - impeding the all important final transfer of the body’s moisture.
This problem has been overcome by the fabric manufactures, in particular GORE-TEX®, by adding a membrane to the underside of the material. This contains micro pores which are smaller than a water droplets restricting their penetration into the garment but larger than water vapour molecules allowing them to pass through, allowing the jacket or trousers to breath. Now these high tech-materials are expensive and so their use is restricted to the quality end of the market typified by products from Sunderland and Galvin Green. This once again has been solved by Gore. Their ultra thin WINDSTOPPER® membrane creates a completely windproof lightweight textile that has high levels of breath ability.
